Hobart

The Australian Antarctic Division headquarters at 203 Channel Highway, Kingston. The complex has a public area incorporating a display area and cafe. The display contains information about the scientific research and logistic support involved in Australia’s Antarctic program. Members of the public are welcome to visit between 8.30am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday. Free Admission. Closed Public Holidays.

Islands to Ice is an exhibition at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery featuring the region south of 40° latitude. Islands to Ice explores the places, the people, the creatures and the phenomena that make the great southern wilderness a world of its own. Melbourne

CSIRO Education Victoria has a wide and varied range of Primary and Secondary science programs, most of which can be held at the Melbourne CSIRO Science Education Centre or at your school. One of their 'Air and Atmosphere demonstrations is on 'Frozen bubbles' which leads to a discussion of current CSIRO research analysing ice cores from Antarctica in order to determine air quality over the last 100,000 years. The Bureau of Meterorology offices welcome school visits, subject to availability of staff and operational requirements. Look for your local office in the telephone book under 'Bureau of Meteorology', or contact the Bureau Regional Office in your state.

The Monash Science Centre in Melbourne runs a Meteorology in Schools program to introduce primary school students and their teachers to aspects of atmospheric science (including climate change and ozone depletion). Staff will visit schools in Melbourne and country Victoria to take classes on various meteorological topics. Bookings can be made through the Monash Science Centre, or phone (03) 9905 1370.

Adelaide

The exhibition In the footsteps of Sir Douglas Mawson is a long-term exhibition which recreates the excitement and interest of Sir Douglas’ journey of scientific discovery. It shows some of the opportunities and rewards of science by focusing on Sir Douglas and his driving interests, Antarctica and geology. The gallery shows the scope of his achievements, his adventures, and his success in taking science to extreme environments. His work is presented as part of an ever-evolving scientific endeavour. The inspirational nature of Mawson’s life is a stimulus for people to rise to personal challenges, to understand the world in a scientific way, and to lift aspirations. A Douglas Mawson quiz is included.
